California Highway 9 Saratoga to Santa Cruz, CA September 26, 1998

This weekend we woke up to rain. Originally we had planned to go hiking, but with the thought of mud coating out shoes we said almost simultaneously "how about going for a drive?". Besides we both weren't feeling all that great. Last year we had attempted to take Hwy. 9 to Santa Cruz, but both ended up getting car sick half way over. We were feeling well enough on Saturday to try the winding narrow trail once again. We caught this alternative to Hwy 17 in Saratoga (just take Boulder Creek Road in old downtown Saratoga, which turns into Hwy. 9). Be sure to fill up on gas as the next station isn't for at least 20 miles. It was raining as we left Saratoga and started our ascent over the mountains. As we climbed we passed several of the mountain wineries which are scattered until you reach the summit. You'll be happy to know that we DID NOT partake, as we were driving and are VERY responsible (yeah right!) adults. Just before reaching the top we got caught in the middle of a cloud, or fog, or something. Anyway it was hard to see and it was wet. More on Hiway 9>>
