Hollister Hills
State Vehicular Recreation Area
Hollister, CA

Deep into the hills of Hollister is a way cool off road park with the creative name of "Hollister Hills". It's located about 25 or 30 miles south of San Jose. If you're an off road enthusiast this place is well worth the drive. The park itself is 800 acres that is specifically set aside for 4 wheel drive vehicles and dirt bikes. It consists of narrow winding roads and trails starting from an elevation of 660 feet up to 2425 feet. The trails range from scenic, windy, gravel roads, all the way to straight up super bump trails. With the generous amount of space in the park there is plenty of room to feel that you're on your own, but small enough so that if you get stuck odds are someone may be by soon to help you out.
Each trail is prominently marked with a system that is exactly like that snow ski runs. There is a sign with the name of the trail and a marker indicating the level of difficulty. These range from a green circle, (easiest,) to a blue square, (more difficult,) all the way up to a black diamond (too scary for us!). A map that you are given when you pay your fees outlines all the trails. The fee is a minimal $4.00, which gives you access to the trails all day long.
The "upper ranch" course is the area set aside for cars/trucks/Jeeps. The "lower ranch" is where you can let loose on your ATV or dirt bike. The two courses never intersect, so you don't have to worry about getting smacked by a big ol' scout if you're on a little Honda trail 90.
The "upper ranch" course contains a variety of man made obstacles that challenge you and your vehicle. The obstacles include small hills, a teeter totter, a mud pit (currently dry), a rock challenge, and more. The obstacle course area was where everyone hung out and watched a lot of pretty fancy driving.
