In addition to the well known antique stores of
Niles there is it's original claim to fame. That of Charlie Chaplin.
In the early days of silent films Chaplin lived and ran his studio Essanay
Studios, here in Niles. I've heard a number of different reasons as to why
they left. One of them was that there was a couple of years where the weather
just wasn't all that great. Looking elsewhere they headed down to LA. Who
knows just how true that is...for all I know they just wanted to be close
to Disneyland for holding company picnics. I think he may have filmed "The
Tramp" here. They, being residents, sure pride themselves on the fact
that Chaplin was from Niles for sure. Every year they hold "Charlie
Chaplin Days". Perhaps it's somesort of a "Founders Day"
type of thing.
Thinking about it though I can't help but picture people waddling around
town wearing black hats and carrying a cane.
