The next day Whitney had to work so we decided to venture out on our own. I
(Noel) actually grew up in this area until I was 10, so we thought it would be
fun to take a ferry over to the islands. Jason had never been on a ferry boat
and he was like a 6 year old on Christmas Eve. We found the ferry loading
dock and decided to take the Bainbridge ferry (http://www.ferrycam.com/). It
was only $9 for our car and both of us. Pretty cheap for a cool boat ride! I
believe the ferry leaves about once an hour.
Driving on to the boat is a little weird. Sort of like packing sardines in a
can. We parked our car and ran up to the observation deck. The view of the
Seattle skyline from the docks is impressive. You can really see what an old
shipping port Seattle is with all the brick buildings and wooden piers
intermingled with the modern skyscrapers. We went inside to check out the
snack bar and the next thing we knew we were off. I didn't even feel the boat
start moving.
The trip was spectacular. There was a break in the clouds and we could see
the snow peaked Olympic mountains on the horizon behind the islands. It was
very cold though and windy. But the contrast of the blue sky with the green
islands and the white mountains was breathtaking. Cute homes line the shore
upon reaching the Bainbridge harbor. We drove off the boat and headed up the
road. Our destination was Gig Harbor. My childhood home. Unfortunately, we
got caught up in the driving on Bainbridge, so we didn't get to explore it.
But it seemed to have a lot of charm. The first stop we made was over the
first bridge, in a quaint place called Poulsbo.
