Poulsbo is a Nordic village of sorts. Norwegian and Swedish flags hang at
every corner. We ducked into some great antique stores and of course had to
get some goodies at the famous Poulsbo Bakery. While we were wandering around
a bunch of kids in knickers and sweater vests (ala 1920's newsboys) burst out
into a Broadway number. They were inviting the town to come and see there
play later that week. Very charming and heartwarming. A sense of community
is so important and yet is so lacking in many places, but not Poulsbo. One of
the kids ran up to Jason, handed him a flyer, and added a "hope you can make
it!". Although we knew of course we couldn't make it, it did put a smile on
our faces.
We got back in the car and headed up the road. Next stop, Gig Harbor. As we
drove through town it struck me how much I could remember and how little it
had changed. Like Poulsbo, Gig Harbor is a village. Although the ethnic
flair is lacking. There are fewer shops and restaurants than the previous
town, but we ducked into the legendary "Tides Tavern" for a late lunch. I
remember that place as being the "forbidden zone" when I was a child, but it's
sort of TGIFridays minus the annoying hats and buttons when your an adult.
We decided to head back towards Seattle. We crossed the famous Narrows Bridge
(The Galloping Gertie) over to Tacoma and then on up I-5. We picked up Mark
and Whit and went to the 5 Spot for dinner. The 5 Spot is the coolest diner.
It's situated on top of Queen Anne. Every 4 months or so the theme of the
restaurant changes, and we were lucky enough to be there when they were
celebrating Brooklyn (the brisket and lasagne are to die for!). Definately
hit this spot if you get the chance! And if you go in for the late menu
(10p.m.-12a.m.) all entrees are $5!
After dinner we headed down the hill to a favorite piano bar called Sorry
Charlies. I believe the piano players name is Howard and this cat knows every
song ever written. Just tell him what you want to sing a bam it's yours.
Aaron met us there and as we made our way back to a table he was crooning a
mean Billie Holiday "My Man". Then it was Whitneys turn. Howard called her
up and after her first number an audience member requested "The Way We Were".
She sang it and brought the room to a melancholy silence. I guess I should
mention Whit is an awesome singer. Very rich voice with an amazing range. A
perfect casual evening in Seattle includes dinner at the 5 spot and after
dinner drinks at Sorry Charley's. An absolute must!
